Alaska
Fishing...
Alaska is an angling dream come true, whether it is the run of the giant king salmon, two foot long rainbow trout, huge halibut, the far north sheefish or the iridescent grayling of the Interior. Fishing in Alaska can be enhanced by researching the species you wish to fish for, learning their habitat and range and how they are caught. Due to the vastness of the state, it is suggested to decide the areas one wishes to visit and determine what fishing is available. Both the Alaska Department of Fish & Game and the member companies listed below can be contacted for assistance.
For regulatory purposes the state is divided into five sport fishing regions. Additional information on regulatory summaries by region can be found on the Alaska Department of Fish &Game web site. The site also contains information on Ethical Angling, Catch-and-Release Fishing and Safety and Reducing Angling Impacts.
In selecting fishing charters, lodges and guide services, it is important to recognize local knowledge as the key to successful fishing. Timing is also very important in sport fishing in Alaska. Most fishing, especially for anadromous species, must be done in specific periods of the year to increase the chances for success. The brochure "Sport fishing in Alaska" published by the Alaska Department of Fish & Game provides an excellent summary outling the best time to fish by species and regio (this information is also contained on their web site). The member companies listed below provide a wide range of opportunities and are organized by regions of the state where they operate.
