Alaska Transportation...

Getting to and around Alaska is relatively easy and sometimes provides memorable experiences. Since Alaska has few roads, flying is one of the main ways to get around and many of the operators listed in this web site use charter aircraft to access the wilderness. A list of companies providing air charter services can be found under the Air Charter & Flightseeing Activity list.

One can also visit the state by car, bus, camper or motorcoach. Traveling the Alaska Highway covers 1400 miles through British Columbia, the Yukon Territory and Alaska and can be covered in 5 to 10 days from Washington State. It is also possible to travel the Inside Passage with a vechicle by using the Alaska State Ferry System. You can begin your trip in Bellingham, Washington or Prince Rupert, British Columbia and travel north to Haines or Skagway to connect with the highway system to mainland Alaska. Buses also travel this same route into Alaska’s interior. The Alaska Railroad also provides a different way to see Alaska from Fairbanks to Seward. It passes near Denali National Park and passes through the interior, Southcentral areas as well as mountain passes and along the ocean.

Travelers can also arrive the state through cruise ships or the Alaska State Ferry. In addition to bringing one’s car on the ferry as mentioned above, one can walk on and even take a kayak or bicycle. It is a great way to visit Alaska’s coastal communities and to meet Alaskan residents. Thousands of visitors arrive via large cruise ships which provide luxurious accommodations. Their downside is that you see things from a distance and travel in large groups. When these ships dock in Alaska’s small communities they can seem pretty crowded. Many travel agents can provide information on cruise boat travel. An alternative to large ships are the smaller cruise lines which generally travel with less than a 100 passengers. Not only do these ships limit their impacts on communities they also can get you closer to scenery and wildlife. Companies offering these services can be found in the Small Ship Cruises Overnight Category listed under the Activity List on this web site.
